Not sure if anyone goes back this far. But my first RPG that still holds a place in my heart is Dragon Warrior on the NES. Loved that game.

My favourite RPG is probably still Oblivion, it just sorta came at the right time for me.

Growing up I loved the Final Fantasy series, too. Especially Final Fantasy IX. Chrono Trigger as well. A lot of the "great" RPGs from history managed to pass me by.. I've always intended to get around to playing the key ones (The original Fallout games, Vampire - The masquerade, Morrowind, KoTOR...).

I just want to yell "KotOR!" one more time

Rocket Racoon mentioned Golden Sun earlier. I loved those games so much, especially the second one. They might be the most beautiful games I've played on a handheld, and the dungeons and puzzles were all so well designed. I also loved the class system with all the different combinations of Djinn, it was really worth experimenting. The characters and story were so compelling, it was awesome to play as the villains from the first game in the second to see their side of the story. I heard there was a new one coming out, but not for a system I have.

I would have to say Kingdom Hearts is the best I've ever played.
One of the oddest crossovers but for some reason it works really well!

If you like quirky anime stylings, an over the top story, lots of items and classes and a neverending grind where you still manage to feel like you're doing something, check out Disgaea and its sequels and related titles. Tactical RPG fans especially should check it out.
