Clarification: I think you can write the same old stories we've seen before, especially in comics, if you do it well.

I would suggest they think they usually do write good stories.

"interesting angles to drive sales"
Why not just write good stories?

Its better then moving forward with every issue being #1 to drive sales. They are looking for new "interesting" angles to drive sales.

This is getting meta a little. What has happened/will happen. Some B/S George Lucas history revisionism. Leave the past alone, future is much more interesting. What are year 3000 Guardians of the Galaxy getting up to?

Perhaps it was more meant that there might stuff we don't know about the early years. A lot has been explained already, so the area of 'unexplained' for that period is getting less and less. Sure they can always make up new stuff, but the more info there already, the more they have to work around.

Not tying to give you a hard time at all but this struck me as an odd thing to say. It seems to suggest that some things have "happened" already but we just haven't been told about them yet. Rather than saying "Heck maybe they'll make up some new stuff." Just interesting word choice.

I will still take a look when it comes out. Heck there could be something we don't already know. I can't wait to see the reasons behind why mutants are feared. Maybe they are running out of ideas so they are creating this. I know my son will love it. Perhaps they are trying to draw in new blood.
