He has the benefit of being a street level hero, and therefore more relatable. The other big street level hero of the time, DD, could have gotten the same love, but his villains were really really dumb.

But seriously, Spider Man put me into hero's comics, and you simply got to like this guy, he got nice storys, nice villains, many strong supporting characters, and in the early run, that panel on ASM 50. I'm learning and loving doing the order (ok, sometimes hating too), some heroes on Earth-616 I really no nothing about, but it is all due to Spidey, if it wasn't for him, I would never be here.

I am a fan no doubt, so I'm suspicious to say.

Seconded. After the very early run, I guess 20 or so issues in, Spider-Man hasn't dipped in a noticeable way. It also has the most interesting arcs of the rest of the comics I have read so far. A couple of individual issues are better, but not 1 title is.

Also, I love Spider-Man. I thought he was alright before I got into the comics, but the more I read the more I see why he is the most popular Marvel character. There has been no other comic which is as consistently good as Spider-Man has been for me.

Also, nobody gets their costume effed up like Spider-Man.

They really amped that up for Ultimate. Bendis got this part of Parker straight on.

I wish I could cite some pages or panels for this, but I just imagine Spidey climbing out from under some rubble with his mask ripped (you know the way they do) and boom, the whole sinister six is there. Nobody does resigned badass like Parker. Batman is close second.

I second this. That is why I find his books so interesting. Parker is made by his adversity. And look how much there is of it. Ben, George Stacy, Gwen Stacy (and thats just as far as I have been).

Sorry, had to come back. Spiderman is really not about spiders either. The cool or compelling core of Spiderman is Peter Parker, a nerdy teenager with real world problems. It's a much belabored point, but he was the first superhero who had to worry about things like bullies and grades and later paying his rent. In the modern era, he's the self taught loner (I detest some of the editorial changes to his character the last few years) with an unyielding character. He might get my vote for toughest guy in the Marvel 616 universe. He will never quit, and he will always make the correct moral choice (choosing your 98 year old mother figure over the smoking hot love of your life aside). Watching a young guy filled with self doubt mature over the years into a hyper competent crime fighter with little training and super hero support while keeping his sense of humor, that's why you read Spiderman.
