Topic review - Dr. Strange

Based on the reviews I see that not everyone is enjoying the return of Dr. Strange in Marvel Premier, but I've really liked it so far. Sure, a couple of the demons he's fought are a little corny, but they're straight out of B-horror, which I kinda dig. Additionally, the broader arc right now is fairly intense, with the return of Shuma-Gorath or whatever, I'm excited for the climax, hopefully it doesn't let me down (Edit: It didn't, not one little bit). I know the argument against Strange is that he seems all powerful, and it's true that he does occasionally just own someone without really trying, but I think it's important to keep in mind that he's really the only line of defense against certain forces in the Marvel U, so he needs to be on top of his game. When he's really up against a powerful entity, he gets his ass kicked right up to the moment he finally pulls it together (not unlike most heroes I might add), but you get the feeling that if he can't quite get it done, then earth is fucked. That's exciting, to me at least.

Yea, the Odin thing is also cheap and it really weakens Thor as a series. I actually prefer that character in Avengers books over his own title for just that reason.

And man your right, his style was tailor made for that kind of content. Did you know in like 69 or 70 Steranko wrote a history of comic books book. I am trying to find a copy, would be interesting to see his take and the at the time behind the scenes.

Personally, I notice that way more in Thor. There have been several situations where Odin is like "LOL, I HAD THIS UNDER CONTROL THE WHOLE TIME!!11" then snaps his fingers and everything is dandy again.

I really wish Steranko had done a run on Doctor Strange, I imagine that the comic would have benefitted hugely from his psychedelic art style.

Ehh, at the moment I AM a Dr. Strange hater. It isn't my least favorite title, but it is pretty darn close. I am hoping it gets better.

That arc was pretty good, and I am not hating on Dr. Strange as a character, I just hate how the early writers wrote a lot of his stories where even if he is shot with something he magically (yes I meant it!) has a spell to protect him. Honestly, I think that this happened a lot in the 60's stories for Marvel, it just seems to be happening an abundantly more in the Dr. Strange stories, and I have especially noticed it more so after the Tribunal arc.

I think the Tribunal was just after it. It's the arc where Baron Mordo teams up with Dormammu and Dr. Strange has to go into hiding while trying to seek the power to fight against them. He has to track down "Eternity" who tells him he already has the power to defeat Dormammu and then ultimately he meets him in a duel and wins.

Oh, yeah, the new costume was awful. It didn't last long though.

We disagree in other places too. ;) I've seen you mention Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD a fair few times and I dislike almost all of those (Except a couple of Steranko ones) I think in some cases with Doctor Strange I am just biased towards the character. There is just something about him I really like. However, there was a particular run in Strange Tales that is one of the standout story arcs of the 60s for me. Also one of the longest early stories, I believe.

It was Strange Tales #130-146. I really enjoyed that.

Man, normally I am right there with you, but Strange bugs me. Most the stories come off as just silly to me (ok, not as bad as he Torch solo stuff or some sub-mariner, but still bad), and that new costume....sweet jeasus.

Don't get the Dr. Strange hate at all. I think he's great, even the early stuff.
