Has anyone seen this movie yet? It's with Tom Hanks and the movie is about his son (not real life son). Something about Tom dies in the 9/11 attack. It looks good, I've been trying to get it at the local Redbox for a week now. No such luck yet. I hope I'm not disappointed when I do finally get to see it.

My wife has been wanting to watch it quite a bit. We love Tom Hanks. It's been in my Netflix queue for a while.

I have thought about seeing it, but want to hear if it is any good first before I do.

From the review I read in The Observer the other day:

Quote:
From early on, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close reveals itself as a hollow, calculated, manipulative film. It uses the events of 9/11 not as a narrative armature on which to build a structure of ideas relating to an important juncture in modern politics and culture, but as a trapeze on which to perform pleasing emotional displays. Smug and whimsical, its revelations are factitious, its comments on relationships shallow. It is not the fault of Thomas Horn that by the end of the movie you feel like throwing Oskar's tambourine in the East River and sending him off to swap written messages in silence with his grandfather.

I never read reviews. I find that I often like the movies that get bad or sub-par reviews. I'm odd that way. Well we struck out again today! It's just never there. I should add it to my Netflix queue.

I don't read reviews for the same reason. I haven't heard of this movie yet, but it sounds like it's based on a real life story. Is it? I bet the movie industry could go on for more than a few decades making movies about 9/11.

It's actually an adaptation of a novel. Though, I don't know if the novel is based on a true story or not.

This is how I read that review: I went to film school and know a lot of fancy words. I am using fancy words about this movie because that is what I get paid to do and I went to film school and know a lot about movies.

Whereas I read, "this is an emotionaly manipulative pile of shit".

Couldn't give a damn about the views of critics when it comes to most films, but when it comes to films which look like arty toss, the bad reviews are usually pretty spot on.

yeah, that's what I got out of it too.
Too bad that's probably what they'll use 9/11 for in the coming decades.

I actually like reading reviews. Lots of times I like to read them after I've seen the movie or heard the album but I'll read them before too.
I like to read Ebert's reviews of movies. I don't always agree with him, but he usually has thoughtful insight on the movies he reviews.
