I saw Spider-Man: Homecoming on Thursday night, and I've gotta say, it was a fantastic movie. Probably my favorite incarnation of Spider-Man and Peter Parker so far. However, there was one huge thing that bothered me throughout the whole movie. Right at the beginning, we see Adrian Toomes and his salvage crew cleaning up after the Battle of New York in 2012. BUT, the time card after this scene reads "8 years later"! That would put Homecoming in 2020! It's also implied in the movie that it takes place only a couple months after Civil War, meaning it should also be set in 2016. I don't know if this is a mistake on Marvel's part, or they're trying to retcon the whole timeline. It seems like they could have avoided any and all confusion by just saying "4 years later" instead of 8. Thoughts?

My thought is that the battle of New York doesn't take place in 2012, but in 2009 or 2010 instead.

No question they kinda muddled the timeline there.

I've yet to see Homecoming, but judging by the timeline, either it's a mistake, or a Retcon.

I read an article where they theorized that it had to do with the crayon drawing that Toomes shows his coworker in the beginning
which would have been drawn by Liz. But then Liz is a senior in high school, so it wouldn't make sense if it was just 4 years.
Maybe they didn't catch that until it was too late to do anything other than change the text of the flash forward.

No-prize in Spider-Man 2 credit sequence to whoever can rationalize this mix up in the most fun way.

I did not even think about this other than when it said 'eight yars later' i assumed Avengers came out in 2009.
