My number one is polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski ("Last Wish" has english translation, so is first book of "Witcher" - You should definitely try that).
From world famous autors I have to say Arturo Perez Reverte, especially "The Flanders Panel", "The Fencing Master" & "The Club Dumas" (don't worry if You've seen "Nineth Gate" by Polanski - the book is totally different from this shitty movie - worst adaptation eveeeeeer!!!!)

Orson Scott Card or Steven Erikson, it's too close to call for me.

I'm actually in the middle of the second Malazan book right now! Huge effort to get through Gardens of the Moon, but I made it, and it was worth it.

I can't pick one favorite because the writer's I read I like for all different reasons. I like Stephen King because he writes stories that are clever and unusual. I like Robert Ludlum because his stories are full of action and conspiracy theories. I read Nora Roberts because she writes mysteries and unique romance stories. It really is hard to pick just one.

Lately, I have been reading a lot of John Sanford. His Prey series, and later the Virgil Flowers series, were really very good.

Also, he only wrote 4 of them, but the Virgle Cole series by Robert Parker is one of the only westerns I really liked. Don't hold the Ed Harris movie against him, his books were very well written.
