Not being familiar with this series, I just read an extensive review on the first one. It sounds very "Twilight-ish" if you know what I mean. Target audience is teenage, or younger, girls. Having read all of the Twilights, I may have to pick this one up just to see if I can get through it. For my younger friends, of course.Um... I have no idea what review you read. Malazan book of the fallen is a mix between The Black Company series (by Glen Cook) and DnD (the series was originally conceived of as one of the tabletop games by Erikson and Esslemont, and they got really into the world they created). It's blood and guts, the highs, lows, successes and failures of humanity and other races in the face of impossible odds and tasks.
It's damn good fantasy, although a little wordy for some.
As to jfpj91 - I didn't even know he got the advance for the other 6 novels and set of novellas, thanks for making me notice that. No idea on the Encyclopedia Malaz though, although it will be quite an interesting read.
