I'd have to go with Robert Heinlein I think, although Pratchett gives him a good run for his money.

Probably Terry Pratchett with Isaac Asimov as a close second. some of my favorite books have been written by two or three authors.

My favourite is probably Robin Hobb. I love everything she writes.

I like Heinlein, but his later works are way off the deep end for me.

My favorite author is a toss-up between Steven Brust and Kurt Vonnegut. I find it's dependent on what I’m in the mood for or currently reading when someone asks.

Jack Whyte wrote a series of historically plausible Arthurian books (at least 10) that I totally loved, and then moved on to (again, historically plausible) knights templar and then William Wallace.
If you've ever thought of those types of stories and legends as being too good to possibly be accurate, then read his books. They give you hope that it could have been possible, lol.
George RR Martin is obviously hugely popular right now... and it's well deserved. I'm reading through a Song of Ice and Fire for a second time right now.
Last, although I’ve never read any of his other books, and I’m not a huge fan of his personal views, I really, really enjoyed Orson Scott Card’s Ender/Shadow series.

I like Boris Pasternak though I read only Dr. Zhivago. I believe he has written several other books. When I was younger, I used to read Sidney Sheldon's novels and he was one of my favorite authors.

Orson Scott Card or Steven Erikson, it's too close to call for me. Patrick Rothfuss is a close runner up, too, though.

Big fan of Michael Chabon and Mark Helprin.

I'll also read pretty much anything Dave Eddgers or David McCullough put out.

My absolute favourite is Chuck Palahniuk. For the ones who ask themselves "who?": he's the guy wrote Fight Club, which is also one of of the best book adaptations ever.
