That's why we need Halloween. As a firewall against Christmas starting January 4th.

It's really pretty easy if you have a steady hand and a lot of patience. Just go to a site like zombiepumpkins.com and download some pumpkin stencils, print them out. Then tape one to a pumpkin and use one of those little saws that come with the crappy pumpkin carving kits that you would buy in a store to carefully cut out the pattern. I didn't think I would be able to do it at first either. But then I tried my hand at it and it turns out that it's not as hard as you would think :)

See ... and here I am wondering how the entire facebook world is amazingly good at carving pumpkins.

I have been wanting to carve a pumpkin for the longest. I've never actually done it before. I watched my dad do it as a kid (sketching the outline first with a marker). Maybe I can get my gf to carve one with me.

I live in a country that doesn't really do Halloween, and so mine tend to be some of the only proper carved pumpkins in town, which is why I stick to these rules:

* Patterns are cheating -- design from scratch with a marker on the pumpkin.
* Keep it simple -- I always forget to order more specific pumpkin tools online in time, so I'm working with a somewhat unsubtle saw.
* Classical designs only -- ghosts, bats, pumpkin faces, cats, witches, monsters, that kind of thing. (Nothing you can't explain to a 5-year old.)

Anyway:

Your pumpkins look great!

Just curious, Alex, what country do you live in?

The Netherlands -- we do have a similar holiday (Sint-Maarten, on November 11) which is like Halloween with the serial numbers scratched off, if the serial numbers were all the actual good bits of Halloween.

You know, I didn't like it when I first saw it, but I really enjoyed the 3D conversion release they did a few years back. For some reason, seeing it in 3D helped my brain make sense of all of the visual "chaos" on screen. Being able to view those sets in perspective with depth made a huge difference.

One of those rare instances where 3D actually enhanced the original experience and wasn't just a gimmick.

I've never been able to watch it. I can't handle musicals. The only one I was ever able to make it all the way through was Little Shop of Horrors
