If anything is worth doing, it's worth doing RIGHT.

And doing it right means reading all of it. Because if you don't read all the horrible Speedball, how can you then recognize the really good stuff?

I'm not defending not starting from FF#1 , but you have to understand that a LOT of modern Marvel readers cherry pick what they want to read and don't come close to reading everything that comes out each month, and tend to complain about all the connectivity at times, especially when it comes to Events... I don't agree with these people, but they are usually the ones that argue against starting at FF #1 (1963)...

Part of what is great about this site is that it allows you to cherry pick.

I think that the best is beginning at FF#1 but I don't think you need to read it all.

The best in my opnion is something like this list of spider man issues.

It's not just the essential issues of cmro. It's complete enough to have a good experience but cut some of the less important issues like most of marvel team-up

Unfortunately I don't know other lists like that to other characters

Starting with FF #1 is great if you want to get the Marvel history. However, the storytelling style is vastly different (and much more sexist) than it is in modern comics. If someone would rather start at something like Bendis' New Avengers or G. Willow Wilson's Ms. Marvel, those are also valid paths.

I'll say start where ever you want. Personally that was with FF#1.
But a lot of those old stories is hard to read, some is even bad enough to get you to stop reading, and they might have been percieved good at publication time.
So start where you want, and if (when) you get hooked, then go back and start reading from the beginning.
And if get in to deep, you'll start reading the golden age, and when there is no longer any hope of recovery, you start reading the Romance order, and think to your self "This is bad, but I've read worse"
