Ahh, I wondered when one of our other esteemed residents of the United Kingdom would chime in.

I doubt many British people would know that one. I'm just the sort of person who hears a phrase like that and just has to find out about it, or it bugs me.

I noticed no one from Canada had chimed in so I'll just say that we sound exactly the Americans everywhere except for the eastern provinces which speak french (like Quebec) and New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland which sound very strange I don't know how neufies got their accent. (p.s how much does a bracket that never closes bother you guys?

MODERATOR EDIT: )

*A lot :)

I have to say I usually hear no difference from the way Canadians speak, with the exception of a few words every now and then, and that's not consistent, depends on the person. Vernacular seems more or less in line with that used by the northern US. That is what proximity will get you.

Glad to know we have a Canadian in our midst.

also what do you guys think of the idea that we should throw all other languages out and start with a new language? I know there are several engineered languages one proposed by the U.N as a common language for all it's members to speak, and a language based on mathematical concepts that is entirely logical.

While its fun to talk about, this will never....ever....work.

Also, esporanto. That I think is as close to a built language as we have (or are ever going to) get.

Surely English is the only useable world language? It's already spoken as a first language by a 1/4 of the worlds population and as a second language by at least 1/2.

On top of that it's related to French, Spanish, German, Italian and Dutch which form the basis for most of the worlds languages because we were all conquering bastards back then.

The only languages that get close are mandarin and Spanish. Mandarin doesn't work, it's not even universally spoken in its own country and is utterly at odds with the alphabet used by 3/4 of the planet. Spanish won't work because the Asian countries (like china/ Japan) speak english as a second language.

I think star trek had it right, English will rule the world as a global language by about 2200...
