I was listening to this argument about the rise of Violence in comics (Walking Dead and Invincible were cited). And it was suggested that while independent books have always had a higher level of violence, that the big 2 are also becoming more violent.

Is this a real thing?

Guess what the most violent program's on tv are...

... Boys cartoons. More guns get shot, people kicked and stuff blows up than any action film.

Comics are the same, massively violent. People seem to put a different level to it because it's drawn rather than real. In a similar way i was rewatching the transformers films at the weekend. They are graphically violent to the transformers, including (spoilers) - ravage being ripped from his spine by his tail, jazz being ripped in half, prime being impaled, megaton having his head speared on an axe and them leave red from his body, ripping his spine out and then being dumped as a close up by the camera and that was a pg13 in the uk (basically anyone can see it).

Marvels always been violent, the premise of nearly every comic is beating the crap out of someone. The only way they can get ,ore violent is to be more graphic, is that what they mean?

But in what way? They hit each other more, or you see the results more? The first one i don't buy, the second one I'll probably accept.

If we're talking enhanced gore and depravity vs. good old fashioned fisticuffs then yeah it's more "violent." But I agree with maiden in that comics have always been about kicking ass and taking names. That much hasn't really changed.

edit: my spell check sabotaged your username Maidel, sorry.

Yea, Green is right. Its the realism of the violence more then the amount. It used to be Boff, Pow, now you can see people getting their faces shot off in some books.

I would agree with you all on this. It's the same with TV and movies. Violence back in the day was a Western movie and John Wayne shooting someone. Now it's much more graphic. It's always been there, just more vivid now.

I agree violence in comic books has become very graphic compared to what it used to be. I think we have Quentin Tarantino to thank. Then you have to wonder where guys like Quentin got these ideas, though.

Realistic Comic Violence predates Tarantino's popularity I think.

And where he got his ideas is other movies. Every one of his movies is an Homage to earlier movies or movie generes. While enjoyable, his ideas are not original.

First of all, robots don't count. That's why the animated TMNT had robot Foot Clan, that's why GI Joe introduced B.A.T.S., Hordak had robot minions; that's why you could rip Vision apart in Avengers Disassembled. Now, I'll grant you Invincible is crazy explicit in its violence. And some other things you see in non big 2 stuff, The Boys, Preacher, IDK are also really over the top. Plus you never would've seen anything like Sentry ripping Ares in half even like 5 years ago. Ultimate line had some moments, but it was always billed as more hardcore.

I really don't think your default day to day big 2 title is anymore violent in quantity. When you do see something it has reasonable odds it'll be the new worst thing you've seen b/c they have to keep shocking an increasingly jaded audience. Have to raise the bar. I think it was the dude from Rammstein who said you just can't shock anyone anymore, apart from killing someone on stage.

Agree about the increased demand for realism being a big factor as well.
