I thought about Green Arrow too (he always seemed kind of metro), but I actually felt that the TV show coming out (heh) made him an unlikely choice. Also, doesn't he have one of the more long standing relationships with Black Canary? My second thought was Aquaman.

I think choosing a character with a sinificant existing hetero love life is going to seem like a retcon and a cheap pop gimmick to 'make' someone gay. Even in 2012 there's a tightrope to walk here. They have a burden to do this in a respectful manner. Someone can't/shouldn't just wake up and be gay. I think part of the process would be selecting a character w/o a lot of existing relationship baggage.

*cough*New 52*cough*

Agreed that Green Arrow has a longstanding on-again/off-again relationship with Black Canary; if that relationship has been preserved in the 52 era then it would definitely feel extra retcon-y to pick Green Arrow. But if he and Black Canary don't have a relationship in the latest version of DC, then he could be a contender.
And generally I'd say having a gay superhero on TV would be cool and well received, but the only hangup I could see is that the TV-watching-but-no-comic-book-reading fans will associate the new Green Arrow show with the Green Arrow of Smallville, who was decidedly not gay.

Aquaman would be a faux pas in my book, because pop culture already treats Aquaman as a joke; he's the ineffectual, unwanted hanger-on in the mind of the public (I often try to defend him to no avail to the comic-illiterate). To make him gay would probably be seen as an insult to the gay community.

One Million Moms, the Christian hate group, has just come out with the following (via The Escapist):

Quote:
"Parents may have been able to avoid a new character since it would not be one many children have grown to admire," the group wrote on its website. But now, a superhero that kids have grown up with will suddenly have the gay. "Who will they choose; Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Plastic Man, or another one of their characters that children look up to?"

And that's not all! In an even "more shocking" twist, Marvel superhero Northstar, who came out in the mid-90s while still a member of Alpha Flight, recently married his man. "Children desire to be just like superheroes. Children mimic superhero actions and even dress up in costumes to resemble these characters as much as possible," they said. "Can you imagine little boys saying, 'I want a boyfriend or husband like X-Men?'"

"This is ridiculous! Why do adult gay men need comic superheroes as role models? They don't but do want to indoctrate [sic] impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light," they continued. "These companies are heavily influencing our youth by using children's superheroes to desensitize and brainwash them in thinking that a gay lifestyle choice is normal and desirable."

I was previously mostly just interested in who they would pick, I am now an active supporter of this move.

Gotta love hate groups. You gotta admire their strong stance on strictly following religious teachings.....except for that whole "judge not least ye be judged". That must have been optional.

Wow. Those guys are *really* good at hate-speak.

I missed that day in Sunday School...

The radical hate groups are insanely ridiculous. I wish creators would stop making characters "come out" and just create them as gay, bi, trans, etc. I think that would make more of a statement than having them come out as some big political statement.

In this instance, a newly created gay character would be almost impossible to pull off without it becoming a sad PR gimmick. Frequently media attempts at taking on a subculture fail miserably I assume due to creative not being part of said subculture. Anybody see the Bones 'horseplay' episode? Or was it about furries? Something I know about and was disappointed by, the Psych episode where they go to a comic con. Just awful. I love that show but I have to skip that episode lest I freak out. And a lame episode dealing with alternate reality gaming on Numbers. There was an episode of Life where they had to get to (bum bum bum) LEVEL 10 on Prince of Persia to find some lame clue. They had to bring in a teenage girl to do it. Bros, someone down in IT could just gameshark you wherever you need to go, no need to outsource. So bad. I get not having a horse furry on your writing staff, but could they not find someone with comic or gaming backgrounds to consult for these episodes? Come on, Hollywood.
