In another thread DOOM said something about Matt Fraction that got me to thinking.

Who is the best writer working in your opinion. Best of Marvel, Best of DC, and Best Overall. What is that writers high point and did they have a low point.

There are a TON of good writers out there (we are in the writer's era, after all).

Some current guys that I like are:

Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
These guys almost always work together. They took over Marvel's cosmic stories coming out of Annihilation and it was a great run. They're responsible for Annihilation: Conquest, Realm of Kings, War of Kings, Thanos Imperative and Annihilators. They also were writing Nova AND Guardians of the Galaxy at that time.
as if that weren't enough they just did a great run on Heroes for Hire and I think they're writing New Mutants. I don't know what they were doing before that but at this point they've done no wrong since I've heard of them. They also do some DC stuff.

Jeph Loeb
This guy is a bit of a mystery... he has written some AMAZING stuff:
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: Hush
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
but he is also the assclown responsible for:
Red Hulk
Ultimates 3
Ultimatum
and he had a pretty rough run on Wolverine.
Maybe he just sucks at Marvel??

I really enjoy Matt Fraction:
he is currently writing great runs on Iron Man AND Thor/Journey into Mystery
he wrote Iron Fist with Brubaker
The Order was a pretty solid book while it lasted.
Low point for him: his run on Punisher: War Journal was very underwhelming.

Ed Brubaker is sweeeeet too!
He wrote a lot of Gotham Central which was a detective book that took place in Gotham but didn't dwell on superheroes.
AND he wrote the epic Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive storyline as well as War Games.
I really liked his Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire run on Uncanny, though I'm sure some would consider that a low point.
He is also solely responsible for the current run of Captain America which is getting close to 100 issues.

Those are some of my favs... idk who is the best though...

I am with you on Loeb. How the guy who wrote Hush also wrote Ultimatum (For my money the worst of the entire ultimate line) is beyond me.

I like Fraction ok, although for me he is hit or miss. Not so much title wise but in a single title. Some issues I love and then follow with...dull.

I will throw Garth Ennis (SP?) in the mix. Preacher remains one of my all time favorite books.

While I love Walking Dead and Invincible, I think they could both go to the next level with better writing. The plotting is great, but there are times when both books get a bit navel gazing and the dialogue isn't always the strongest (after listening to interviews and what not with Kirkman, they are both really in his voice).

Also, I have had some hate for Bendis, but the early Ultimate Spider-Man is top notch.

I didn't clearly state my love for Fraction's Thor. It has propelled him to a fav character of mine. (though that process started with JMS's run and was not hurt by Gillen in between JMS and Fraction)
Kind of the same with Iron Man.
I haven't really read him too much in single issue format, mostly trades, but I've liked most of that.

If I had to say, his low point is probably Fear Itself or his run on Uncanny (neither of which I hated as much as the Interweb did)

Agreed on the uncanny unevenness of Loeb, but I'll say I loved Spider-Man: Blue.

I haven't heard of Ed Brubaker and this Gotham Central detective story. Loeb is definitely my favorite overall, probably because I like Batman overall so his writing is more enjoyable.

It won an Eisner, I believe.

I think Stan Lee's legacy speaks for itself. He got into the comics business back in the 1940's, I think, and he is still going strong. He helped create SpiderMan, the Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, and my personal favorite, Scarlet Witch.

Sure Stan created a lot of iconic characters, but go read his stuff. It is just so very bad writing.

I'd probably have to say Mark Millar. I enjoy almost everything of his that I've read, I'd say with the exception of Nemesis.

The stuff I've read from JMS has been really good, too, but I haven't read a lot.
