Well, that is the one place we run into a technicle problem. Books are being set in an order. You can choose to see specific title, groups or charactes, but the books are still in the same order. The website would have to be redesigned from the ground up to make that work, and even then, not sure it would be possible to have a book exist in 2 places in the order.

Also kind of defeats the purpose of an order I would think.

That i would say is HUGE understatement. There are books which should be presented in more than 2 places (example: read on).
I'e tried once the chronological X-men order. The main question was always: "who the F*?k are those people? anyone seems to know them". It wasn't fun, so i stoped reading chronological orders. In my opinion chronological reading would kill all the fun from such stories like (Now: Example) X-men Forever (2001 series). The whole point of that story was to find out what happened behind the scenes. That kind of story writing is the THING that made me love X-men - their whole mitology is based on flashbacks and shifting points of view (if You know what i mean, because i really don't know how to say it in proper english)

To make myself clear: I respect other people desires. If there are people longing for chronology good for them. If Travis decide to do it - that's his call (and his HUUUUUUUUUUUGE amount of WORK). I'm just saying that for me it would be the parameter totallu unused.

Aren't there already at least a couple other options (websites) for strict chronological order? Perhaps those folks who are seeking such list, could be pointed in that direction. I hate to lose anyone from the community, but (and I think Starnes would agree) that is definitely not in the spirit of The Order. Just my opinion.

Yes, there are several pure chronological websites out there. The goal of this order was to offer something different. I personally, and I know a lot of the other users here also felt, that the pure chronological order was hard to read. Our goal was to find a way to read through marvel that made sense.

My big issue with flashback issues being in their chronological place is they almost never have the right tone for the books written around the same era. Also, many mention/introduce things that you haven't seen yet.

Hate to pile on, but I gotta: there are many great things about the CMRO site, but the central, most important factor that underpins everything is the fact that it is largely based on publication date, rather than chronological order.

There are other lists out there that attempt the chronological order angle (albeit not as user-friendly as CMRO), but as everyone has pointed out, they make for a confusing, stylistically uneven reading experience. Not to mention they draw attention to retcons and continuity errors made in flashbacks, which work much better when read with the intervening years as context.

There are lists out there that give pure publication date. At first, I thought this was the best way to go; it is in a sense the most pure form of the canon, since there is no editorializing by the list's curator or users as far as what arcs belong together and what arcs can be split up. I've come to see that CMRO's approach is the most effective; the reason that the chronological orders don't work is they're awkward reading, and CMRO avoids that same pitfall by grouping arcs together within the publication date framework, so that story arcs aren't left hanging off the cliff.
The key to CMRO's success really is this community; Travis does herculean work to be sure, but instead of the list just being the arbitrary ruling of one curator, the Order is the product of the magnificent proofreading job done by users (who am I kidding, primary kudos to Fragsel and Green Flame). Maybe I've just been studying too much, but it seems a bit like DNA replication: DNA polymerase III (Travis) does a great job synthesizing DNA (creating the Order) and even catches some errors due to its exonuclease activity, but without DNA polymerase I and mismatch-repair enzymes (the users) to follow along and set everything straight (posting in the forums), mutations (errors in the order) would abound.

All that being said, I think chronological orders are great ... as a reference guide. It's fun to piece together when Jules and Vincent Vega did what in Pulp Fiction, but if you wouldn't want to watch the movie in chronological order ... it'd lose its magic.

I've voted "Chronological", but then changed to "Published (intended)", 'cause i was thinking of reprints with additional stories which take place in different past time.

Wow, you guys made some good points. When I got to this website, I was thinking "Chronological". Then I read some more and realized this is published order. I was preferring chronological, but after reading this thread I think you have convinced me. Since the point of the order on this website is published, it makes sense to do these in published order as well. I think it makes sense especially with the argument that things could be revealed that could really "ruin" some things later on or otherwise make things confusing.

I think Chronological is a pretty flawed viewpoint to begin with. A system that combines published date with story arcs with character lifespans(obviously I don't want Cable to be an adult one comic and a kid the next) seems to be the best . I think it will be really interesting to see what happens in The Order once we get to more time travel stuff.

I would say publication, because who wants to read about Peter Parker being molested as a child. That being one of the first chronological appearances for Parker would pretty much turn a lot of people off of comics.

Also, not having a all the parker history, would that story have the impact if read first?

Also, how would you read decades of Amazing Spider-Man with that background in your head?
