I was disappointed in this book. I know lots of people loved Vidian as a villain, but while I found him somewhat interesting, he and his scenes weren't really exciting. I didn't like Kanan as a drunk, and there wasn't a whole lot of exploration of Hera's backstory and character. I did like Rae Sloane, though. I found this disappointing because I absolutely love JJM's legends work, both in comics (KOTOR, Knight Errant) and in prose (Knight Errant, Lost Tribe of the Sith).

interesting take... I actually really like Vidian...... I will agree the lack of back story for Hera was a let down, since she is one of the more interesting characters of the era......

Sloane, I believe is in Aftermath.... I think, I could be wrong.....

It happened to be exactly the kind of story that I was expecting to read, so I can't say I didn't like it. But it's not my favorite novel of the new canon either.

I do think it's a good introduction for Kanan. I remember hearing an interview with John Jackson Miller in which he said that he only got a couple of Rebels scripts to base Hera's and Kanan's characterization and dialogue off. Now that I've watched the show I'm curious to re-read this novel to see if the characters feel like the ones I already know.

Well, i remember in the book, kanan was hugely against using the force to do anything for fear it would give his jedi past away.... even at the beginning of rebels, i never got that same feeling from his character.....but it was five years after he met hera, so i guess a lot changed for him.....

I agree. In the novel Kanan clearly isn't in the same emotional place yet that in the TV show. I still want to know more about the development of their relationship in all those years in between.

I was thinking more along the lines of their actions and dialogue, not their motivations.
