I put both in, with the first one roughly 45 days ahead, more or less. If you feel it should be closer to the other 2, let me know, since I'm pretty far from reading this at the moment.

The other placement consideration is that the Historian's Note and the dialogue reference that the trilogy takes place after "Journey to Babel." Ambassador Sarek mentions his treatment from Dr. McCoy, among other things.

There's enough material about the five year mission to make it last for 50 years, so I really don't pay attention to how those books line up against each other as much as against the canonical milestones.

Do they read better back to back, or is there a clear separation of time?

Definitely have 2 and 3 back to back. 2 recaps 1 very well, so you could place something between those two if it makes sense. Otherwise, it reads pretty well as a trilogy, and the reader can keep in their heads what the appearance and culture of the two new alien species are better if they read it straight through.

I put them all together then, since readability is the ultimate goal.

The Empty Chair is listed as having 432 pages on Amazon. I have not been checking page counts, but I remembered that one as being longer than usual, and 352 is typically a placeholder used before Amazon has the actual page count.

The story "Exodus" from Star Trek Gateways: What Lay Beyond should be right after the Challenger entry in the series (same with the Susan Wright story in What Lay Beyond going after her full novel entry in the series). The 23rd century novels do not interact with the 24th century parts of the series, just lay groundwork for the aliens.

994 and 995 (the Exodus and Chainmail entries) should be reversed. The story in What Lay Beyond is the conclusion to Chainmail.
