Luke,

Are you skipping the novels on your progress and just doing the shows? Just curious, saw you were going through enterprise but had bypassed the novels up to where you are (but not the short stories)

I'm just too slow of a reader to try to do all of the ST novels on top of everything else I'm doing. Comics and short stories are fine, but the only novels I'll cover are the ones I've already read or those that I planned to read anyway. So, I'll mark off Bennett's Enterprise novels when I get there, but I'm skipping those set during the show.

I thought that might be the case.

Honestly, you're not missing much. They aren't bad, but nothing great either.

I actually would like to read most Star Trek novels eventually, but I've got lots of other things still to read that I'm even more interested in. For Star Trek, I've mainly limited myself to the "current" novelverse stories set in the 2380s and a few earlier tie-ins (e.g., Vanguard, Seekers) and anything written by Christopher Bennett, since he's amazing.

Bennett is hit or miss for me. His first Rise of the Federation book was the best for me, and the others were average at best. Some of his later stuff like The Buried Age and Watching the Clock is outstanding. If you like a lot of science talk and reconciling of continuity points, he is your guy.

My problem is, he can't figure out what story he wants to tell, at least in the last several books. He has 2 (or more) plot lines going that never or barely intersect, you're just jumping back and forth. I get he may be building to something (although its hard to see how he gets all 6 major plot lines that I have seen so far put together), but even if this is all to build towards some massive payoff that wraps everything up together, there are better ways to do it.

As it is, his last several books that I read (A choice of futures to some degree but Tower of Babel and Uncertain Logic most definitely) felt unsure of itself and a little disjointed.

Rise of the Federation isn't as good as Bennett's DTI series or Buried Age, but I've still enjoyed them. I agree that the Orion subplot doesn't seem to really go anywhere (at least so far), but I really enjoyed the Vulcan part of Uncertain Logic. I think the best part of Rise of the Federation so far has been the Ware plot. The resolution to that I thought was excellent, thought-provoking, and did a good job motivating the prime directive.

I actually like both the Vulcan plot and the Ware Plot in Uncertain logic, but these are two unconnected stories (at least so far, maybe they connect later). Why are they shoved into 1 book when they are both full plot lines? A good narrative is a main plot, and several sub-plots that support the main plot or add to character development.

Here we have:

Path A
Main Plot: Vulcan Stuff
Sub-Plots: Archer considering promotion/job change, Archer relationship, Hoshi & guy I can't remembers relationship

Path B
Main Plot: Ware Stuff
Sub-Plots: Trip resurfacing, Mayweather being short sighted and holding grudges (again), stuff with local politics of various places they go to

That is 2 books, not 1 book.
