So I watched people gush over this book for a week or so before I started reading it. I'm half way through it, and while it's not a bad book, I can't get why people were going wild over it. Is it just cause it's new and part of the new series? Cause, there have been other recent ST book releases last year, and I never heard a peep, and yet this is supposedly the "best ST book to date" (which it isn't by a long shot).

Readers do really want Discovery backstory, especially if it has Georgiou in it. We are in a bit of a Trek book drought, so anything competently written is going to get a little more praise than it is due.

I haven't been really excited with a Trek book's release since 2016's Prey trilogy.

It's not really all that much backstory though. Far less than we got in the last discovery book. It's not very character driven at all. The book is nearly fully focused on the plot events, and not characters. And Lorca doesn't read that much like the lorca from the show, not really (although I guess that would make sense considering the events of the show)

Spoilers for late-season Discovery reveals:
Yeah, the book marks the only appearance so far of the non-mirror Lorca, right?

Dayton Ward is fantastic on Twitter. One of the bits he did in promoting the novel was to give clues to how to spot the differences between the two Lorcas. One was that prime Lorca thinks it tastes great. Mirror Lorca thinks it's less filling.

I wasn't aware of any hype for this book. And that's probably a good thing.
I'm roughly a third way through the book now, and I'm not too impressed. If I heard good things beforehand, I would probably have been disappointed.
