Just as a warning, this post will have spoilers.

So I have been reading on stuff just before and after Civil War. In the New Avengers and Secret War they were building up to there being something wrong in SHIELD (and Hydra), and Iron Man was helping lead the Avengers looking into this. He talked about the problems over and over. Then, all of the sudden, he forgets all this and goes 100% behind SHIELD with the Civil War.

Am I missing where they addressed this? Did he just forget that there were problems in SHIELD (problems that would eventually come out in Secret Invasion). Did he figure, I know there is something wrong going on here and the organization is totally corrupt, but hey, I guess thats ok...

It just doesn't make sense.

I think it's similar to when a new President takes over. They go in thinking "I'm gonna fix this and that AND that and corruption won't touch me!" But soon they realize there are a lot of balls to keep in the air.

Also, I think that's part of the reason for the huge fall Iron Man took after Secret Invasion. I mean, other SHIELD directors had kept their jobs after near successful invasions, but Tony got stuck with the lion's share of the blame. Why? Because he knew going in that there were problems and never got around to addressing them!

How's that?

I buy all that I guess, I am just having trouble with Stark being the so-called super-smart guy.

I read the Iron Man run post secret invasion (the dark reign stuff) before I read the lead up to civil war, and I had a lot of empathy for Stark. Having read this though, I think that if I had read it in order, I wouldn't have had that much empathy for him. He really had a lot of that coming for being a total dumb ass about stuff he already had a warning about.
