I've been reading about the new X-Treme X-Men series coming out, in which characters from different dimensions team together. How is this different from the Exiles series?

If that is an accurate description I would say that the only difference is that Exiles has been cancelled for a number of years and this new volume of X-Treme X-Men is soon to be published.
