That's a good list. Although I'm can't think of any situation where I'd consider Galaxy 4 as essential!

As for Colin, I might add Trial of a Time Lord ( or bits of it at least). But there isn't much of his that I'd consider essential either.

I included Galaxy 4 for context with Mission, Myth, and Master Plan -- but you're right, the Chumblies aren't exactly the Daleks, are they.

Even if sticking to a TV-centric list, I'd seriously consider including a selection of audios for the Davison, Colin Baker, McCoy, and McGann incarnations, even if those are, by definition, not remotely essential.

I think you could easily cut Galaxy 4 as it's really only the final scene that ties in with Mission to the Unknown and that's recapped at the beginning of Mission anyway I think.

I like the idea of essential audios too - especially for the Eighth Doctor. I'll have to give that some thought.

For the stories with the McGann incarnation and Charley, I think so much is important to the overall story that the one or two you could skip, you'd skip for the sake of skipping, and the stories with Lucie, those are pretty tight seasons, too... And skipping stories from the boxsets is nonsense, obviously...

I think a lot of what you'd end up skipping would be one-offs, like Shada, those two Companion Chronicles, Short Trips, etcetera.

It might be a bit cruel to say it, but I think you could skip most of the stories with C'rizz. I've listened to maybe half a dozen of his stories and he really did nothing for me. Heck, even the Doctor didn't seem bothered about C'rizz going! I sort of get the feeling he outlived his usefulness once the Divergent Universe arc ended.

I updated the original post.

I noticed that the Sixth Doctor's first and last serial are missing, as well as the Seventh Doctor's first serial is missing. I've not seen them yet...but why wouldn't those be essential?

Nah, I was going for memorable, and if those're memorable, it's for being bad -- they should obviously both be in.

I just watched Curse of Peladon, and, well, I thought it was fantastic. Alex, do you think it was worthy of inclusion of the recommended list?

And what about The Daemons? I didn't reall like it very much (I thought it was ok), but it seemed like it was a popular one...

I think that "The Trial of a Timelord" should be essentials, because of
The Valeyard, who was to be a future incarnation of the Doctor

The Curse of Peladon should be in, both for to-understand-the-new-series reasons, and because it's well regarded. The Dæmons is a good Master story I could go either way on, but yeah, sure.
