I think the most plausible solution is that he had the bulky chest plate in the 1960s, and the way Stan wrote things, if you even wanted to kiss somebody you agonized over proposing marriage. I don't think he was supposed to have bedded any of the women he was shown with.

Now if you want to interpret things less literally, then yes, there is a problem. But 1960s Iron Man stories are all so painfully stupid that this never makes it far up my list of gripes.
