I don't understand how someone can love the Avengers movie and not want to read an Avengers comic

Pretty much hit it on the head. It's cool to "like" comics or superheroes, but still pretty nerdy to actually read comics.

I'm reminded of the recent 21 Jump Street remake (which was awesome, bee tee dub), where Jonah Hill, playing the adult nerd, is dismayed when he finds out that kids in high school now think being into superheroes and computers is cool, whereas not too long ago, such preferences would put a body on the bottom of the social totem pole.
I think this is because the nerds of the 90s and early 2000s are shaping the popular culture of today. It pains me to admit that Mark Zuckerberg is only one month older than I am. And he's going to get cut a check for one billion dollars in a couple days.

I think the turning point IMO was Iron Man. Unlike the X-Men, Spider-Man, I feel like Iron Man was a property that lacked universal recognition and it took everyone by storm. It was exciting and fun but most importantly it was "hip."

There is something to be said that Iron Man was the first comic movie with Disney marketing behind it. Not a coincidence.

True. I remember when Disney bought Marvel, and some comic book purists I know lamented that it was the death of the comic book. I rejoiced; I knew Disney knows how to make a buck off of a property, and they do it by giving the fans what they want and charging them for it, and the cereal, and the underwear, and the t-shirts, and the specially marked packages of product x. The other day I walked into a PetSmart and saw Captain America dog clothes, and all I could think was, "God Bless Disney!" This never could have happened under the likes of Ron Perelman.

Found the list I was looking for. They adjust ticket prices to a single standard and work out the number of admissions so everyone is only the same playing field. Although the Star Wars movies (the original 3) and Disney movies are inflated because of multiple runs at the theaters over the years. Avengers comes in #82. #1 has held its place for a long long time.

I did have some buddies who got drawn into the greater Star Trek universe by the recent motion picture, but there were way more who, in the rush of leaving the theater, dragged me to Denny's to explain all the intricacies and were really jazzed and then never watched any of it. But FWIW, I don't understand it either. Comics/SF stigma is eroding, but it's still there.

But, the whole "comics are for kids" thing. If someone in their 30s hasn't read a comic since childhood, that's what they're gonna think til they get a good modern title in their hands. They should just be dropping copies of Invincible and Identity Crisis out of hot air balloons over college campuses and office parks.

That's my new pitch for free comic day.

This was the world that I had created. I know what I have to do to fix it...to make things right. There's no problem that can't be solved.

That would be smart, but instead what you get is advertisements for big series that is neither fulfilling or enjoyable to read. Free Comic Book day has become a way for the big names to advertise their events to people who already read comics, not gain new readers.

And short shortsightedness wins again.

Okay, finally saw it. We got a surprise over the weekend and became kid free in the blink of an eye, no contest even though Battleship was also playing we decided that one can wait. We almost walked out before the movie started, was not even in the "big room", the sound was horrid. Once the movie kicked on though things chilled out, I still felt old for having to wear my damn glasses in the theater. And who cares about being nerdy to actually read comics, nerds and geeks totally run this world.
