And relationships were a MAJOR part of comics since the dawn of Marvel.
Maybe you need to read some of those crappy comics from the 60s and get you some learnin'.

1. I do like Invincible. If you take away relationship/romance, you still have what I consider a comic book about smashing bad guys' faces. If you take away face smashing, you have a romance comic.

2. Read crappy 60s comics? Do not want. I admire the determination of the guys churning through that junk on the order, but I am not putting myself through that. Too much media and such out there. I only have maybe 50-60 years left on this planet, not enough time to waste on Lo! The Man-Thing Rises! and the like.

I get that they're a facet. Everything is about relationships, depending on how you define the term, but 'integral'? I disagree. Yeah, they can be cool story elements, Peter Parker is profoundly influenced by his relationships and romances, the X-men over the years have been like a junior high school study hall full of hormonally jacked up adolescents. Supes has Lois, lots of DCers have wives or sig ots. Batman has lots of ladies in and out of costume. This is really just semantics over the uses of major and most. Judge Dredd don't need no ladies bringing him down. Just blast some lawbreakers.

Of course, not EVERY character has them. Some aren't human, some would be plain gross ( there's a scene in ultimate x-men where blob is slobbering over a girl that's just plain wrong).

But for many characters they wouldn't be who they are without their relationships, and spiderman and superman fall right into that category. It's not a requirement for all characters, but even for ones non human ones like the silver surfer, their entire reason for being what they are is because of a romance.

RE: Invincible
That comic used more static panels per page than any Bendis comic I've ever read.
I wasn't referencing the relationships in Invincible, but now that you mention it, relationships (romantic, familial or otherwise) are absolutely integral to the storylines in that book.

I'm not really sure where you're coming from on this...

If the primary reason you are reading comics is to see jacked up dudes in silly costumes throw down then I suggest WWE. Sure that escapist sensational aspect is part of it but good science fiction and fantasy is about telling human stories and looking at the human experience through a different lens. Perhaps the most significant aspect of that experience is how we interact with each other, romantically and otherwise. I will always be more compelled by a villain that is avenging a loved one or seeking vengeance for a wrong done to them (real or imagined) than one who just craves power. In the same way I'll always feel more for a hero that must make the tough choices between interpersonal fulfillment and their duty/responsibility.

Oh.

Weird. *clap clap* implies sarcastic round of applause to me.

How things differ :)

Cutltural differences I guess.

Although to back Reed up somewhat, in the case of the "gay" character announcement, it does seem like it has nothing to do with comics and storytelling, and is just a shameless advertising stunt.
