Any of you ever seen or read a graphic novel. The idea is to attract kids to classic literature in comic book form. In my neck of the woods that haven't gone over so well. How about the rest of the country?

I think you are talking about a specific line of graphic novels. Saying have you seen a graphic novel is like saying have you seen a book. Its kind of a broad category.

I'm not sure you know what you're talking about.

I refer you to the following link: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywor ... xefzoo2z_b. This is just for reference. Research shows that if a teenager likes comic books, they can be transitioned into reading classic novels if they are in comic book form. The above site shows classics plus more popluar character comics for kids and teenagers.

I refer you to Travis' comment, graphic novel covers a massive range of material, classic novels in comic book form make up only a tiny portion of this. There may well be some graphic novels that have been produced solely to attract kids into reading "classic literature", but it's not what graphic novels are for, which is kind of the impression you give in the original post.

Hmmm, I would be rather interested to read the Odyssey in comic form, although I'm not interested enough to buy it. Jane Eyre as a graphic novel just sounds bizarre.

I'm not sure that something that monumentally dull could possibly be improved with the addition of drawings.

Marvel made a Marvel Masterworks or something like that. Although at 38 pages it was more the illustrated cliff notes then the novel.

I think he is hung up on the novel part of graphic novel.

Indeed it does cover a massive range of material. I thought it an interesting way to get kids to read the classics and as I said, they haven't gone over very well in my neck of the woods. Hence, the transforming "Jane Eyre" into a graphic novel just didn't work. Maybe I should have been clearer.

I find it a counter-intuitive idea to turn a novel into a comic to make kids read more novels. Surely the thing to do would be to get them reading a novel that they would like, and lead that into more novels.

I loved reading books when I was a kid, and I don't think it would be difficult to get children today to read the classics. Fuck man, Treasure Island. Just give them Treasure Island.
