I'm about to start Dust of Dreams. I have two more to go in the Book of the Fallen, then Esselmont's novels. I should have all these done before Erikson next two trilogies set in the Malazan setting. I just wonder if anyone knows any news about the Encyclopedia Malaz. Any info on a release date? I turned up nothing with Google. That'll be nice to read, it'll probably clear up a lot of plot points that I had either forgotten about or didn't understand.

Not being familiar with this series, I just read an extensive review on the first one. It sounds very "Twilight-ish" if you know what I mean. Target audience is teenage, or younger, girls. Having read all of the Twilights, I may have to pick this one up just to see if I can get through it. For my younger friends, of course.

Um... I have no idea what review you read. Malazan book of the fallen is a mix between The Black Company series (by Glen Cook) and DnD (the series was originally conceived of as one of the tabletop games by Erikson and Esslemont, and they got really into the world they created). It's blood and guts, the highs, lows, successes and failures of humanity and other races in the face of impossible odds and tasks.

It's damn good fantasy, although a little wordy for some.

As to jfpj91 - I didn't even know he got the advance for the other 6 novels and set of novellas, thanks for making me notice that. No idea on the Encyclopedia Malaz though, although it will be quite an interesting read.

This entire series has been sitting on my book shelf for quite some time now. I tried reading the first novel last year, but quickly realized that it's going to require a lot more focus on my part in order to fully understand (and follow) the main plot, as well as the sub-plots. It's definitely a series that I want to read, but I'm going to need lengthy periods of time, along with the Esselmont series. With the average book consisting of about 1000 pages, it's a journey all on its own...

The first book is a huge problem. It just jumps straight in without telling you anything, and you're left to figure it out as you go. I consider myself a fairly avid reader and have few/none of the usual issues of comprehension that many of my peers complain of and it was still a fair struggle to reconcile everything I read into something I could understand when I first read it (although there are explanations of many things as you read more). Esslemont's first novel (Night of Knives) is much more accessible, but the later ones are much more like Erikson's. You just have to struggle through Gardens of the Moon and read at least one more before giving up, and make no mistake, I've heard a lot of people do just give up, looking for something easier to read. Jordan's Wheel of Time series probably does it for them - a lot of reading, but it's pretty damn linear on the whole.

On the topic of numerous plots and sub-plots: I was originally going to re-read the series and keep notes on the different plots when it was finished (Esslemont needs to get a couple more books done), but with the news of new books coming out by Erikson, the completist in me says to wait. Although I suppose I could formulate opinions and see how they match up with the prequels and whatever the other trilogy will be.

Irishmetal, I'm not 100% certain on this, but I do believe that the Encyclopedia will have a lot of information on the plot points, so that could save you a lot of writing.
The first book is definitely hard to get through. It's just boom, here's the world and characters. By the way there's magic and gods. You'll figure all that out later, here's my story. Reading a wiki article or two regarding the pantheon or magic system before reading GotM wouldn't be a bad idea.
