I just saw the list that came out. (here http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=35843), is it me, or do the big houses generally give you crappy promotional issues and not real comics.

Marvel has gotten a little better about it in the last few years. They're at least in-continuity. You'll have them in the order ;)

I know DC last few have been basically promos for their events, which isn't the worst thing ever. This year I think it's just reprints for both Marvel and DC, which kinda sucks.

What if free comic book day was just that? You could walk in and take one new release or recent back issue? None of this promo crap. There is nothing worse than a comic that is not a comic. Zen!

Yeah, b/c shortsighted corporate America thinks 3.99 is too much to risk on possibly creating new fans.

I think that would be amazing, but the problem would be the accounting. Unless they reimburse the independent comic shops quickly, a successful free comic day could hurt a small-size comics shop in the short term. And I'm sure plenty of comic shops would try to take advantage of the system and claim they sold more free comics than they did. Or they could just give the comics shops a flat sum for the event, but that would end up either giving out more money to shops than free comics to customers (not gonna happen) or giving less money to shops than free comics to customers (unfair to shops).

The current system is the best way to do it with the independently owned comic shop model; they send out books to the stores, the stores don't pay and don't charge. No accounting necessary. In this system, it only really makes sense to have one free comic per publisher, but I completely fail to see why it can't be a legit book instead of a silly piece of fluff.
