Don't know if anyone has been following this, but man are some people (blogs/podcasts I listen to plus some on twitter) going ape-shit over the news confirming Watchmen 2 is coming out.

Once again, the internet decides it hates something.

And speaking of the Watchmen sequal, Alan Moore has been in a bitch fest against JMS...and Mark Waid just wayed (hehe, pun) into it.

If the Internet hates it, it must suck! Because they probably already saw it!

Given the way the world is going...yea, probably. Unless the unfilmed unwritten movie was on MegaUpload (which after reading all the charges against those guys...that might be possible)

This is an interesting case. I personally really liked Watchmen, but I don't hold it as this untouchable thing. If the prequels are good I'll read them, if they aren't I won't. I understand why Alan Moore is upset but he signed the original contract so he has to live with it. I don't see how you could read the "once this is out of print for a year, you can have it back" clause as anything other than "we're going to print this as long as it's profitable, and once it isn't anymore you're welcome to the shriveled husk." It's definitely shady but them's the breaks.

Also pretty common. Look at all the other creators (kirby notably) trying to hold onto their creations and being shut down by contracts they signed...

True, and Kirby probably had even less of a case than Moore does. It's not limited to comics either, I know the Kinks signed this horrible contract In the early 60's whereby they didn't own any of their songs from that period, which included most of their biggest hits. I guess the legal system evolves just like anything else and hindsight is 20/20.

Goes to show you. Always read the contracts you are handed...

Most bands don't own their songs.

Most bands don't own the recordings of their songs. The kinks couldn't re-record their own songs without paying royalties.
