Really enjoyed #116 where Loki skilfully pits the team against The Defenders. Silver Surfer & The Vision battle in a volcano. Wow. The famous/classic Avengers/Defenders War seems to off to a grand start here. 9/10

This entire plot would not exist if the heroes, especially the Avemgers, would 1) stop being such jackasses and actually give a bit of credit to people they have worked with before and simply ask what is going on, and 2) stop being so gullible towards LOKI, for crying out loud. I mean, Loki? I really hate it when the plot of a story depends on a character who should know better being stupid or a jerk in contrived ways.

That being said, the Vision versus the Silver Surfer in the heart of an exploding volcano? That's comic book gold, true believer. That's worth at least three stars all on its own.

I found the reasoning for the hero-on-hero fighting better than most issues from Marvel up to this point. Loki is misleading the Avengers, but what he tells them is mostly true.

I tend to like these quest stories. While hunting for the treasure, much can be revealed about the characters, and they can encounter fantastic obstacles. My guess is that the two hero teams will eventually team up against Dormammu with Loki looking out for himself, but the road there should be interesting.

I agree. At first I thought "Oh no, an entire arc based on a simple misunderstanding", but Loki's and Dormammu's meddling make it a bit easier to swallow.

Surfer vs. Vision/S.Witch went about how I expected. Wanda down, Vision takes up the fight, Wanda almost does and chooses to save her than get the evil eye thing.

Okay, I've heard of mud wrestling...but lava wrestling! That's a new one. And an awesome one!
The score so far: Avengers 0 - Defenders 1

So, this is going to be a whole arc about the heroes fighting each other for essentially no reason. I already think this is going to be a slog.

Well it didn't take long for Loke to regret his alliance with Dormammu.

The gullibility toward Loki is pretty much the only weak point here, and even that's mitigated by Loki almost telling the truth about things.

Oh, also Scarlet Witch being useless (again), that was disappointing too. Englehart is crappier about writing female characters than I would have expected.

You know this issue got me thinking, it'd make far more sense if the Defenders were called the Avengers and vice versa.

The awesome active volcano fight scene was kind of wasted on the art in this book.

  - 15:6 is one of my favorite panels ever, "Too much in love!"

- Bob Brown is as bland as his name, too bad. He gets to draw Silver Surfer vs. Vision fighting in an exploding volcano and really doesn't take advantage.

In the early of Marvel's hero-vs.-hero stories, usually the reason behind the conflict was contrived, and hardly ever made sense. The reason never really mattered, though; the fights were usually fun!

So to most Marvel veterans of the time, this crossover must have been a wet dream. Yet, this is actually done brilliantly. The whole split-up format worked well in a number of Justice League/Justice Society crossovers (those team-ups from 1972-73 used it), which suggests Roy probably gave Steve the idea.

Having said all that, this is shaping up to be a great arc. Sure, the premise is typical Marvel: baddie wants to control the world and sets up a convoluted plan to attain his goal. But the quest for the Evil Eye and the cure for the Black Knight's stoning raises the stakes. And Loki's presence will likely muddy everything for both teams AND Dormammu. This should be fun!

Figures that the Surfer would win out over the Vision and Scarlet Witch; he's in a completely different power class. But it made sense for the Vision to abandon the chase for the Evil Eye after what happened to Wanda. So, Defenders draw first blood.

4 stars. I'm reluctant to call this epic just yet, but it hasn't disappointed so far. In fact, it's as good as advertised up to this point.

Why did Wanda even bother leaving Avengers mansion? You'd think by now she would have done something to figure out how her powers work and how she can contribute to the team.

Just 3 stars. I'm just not a fan of Marvel Misunderstandings, no matter who's pulling the strings!!!

Credit Due - As others have said, Bob Brown's art is just so plain!!!

Ding Dong, Avon - I really can't believe that Dr. Strange couldn't tell that it was the Avengers at his door! Also, Wong should've known that it was important to tell his master!! It wasn't like a Jehovah Witness was knocking!!!

Detailed - You know, the Quinjet seems to change appearance every issue!!!

'Nuff Said - "BY THE HEAD OF MY FATHER!"-Silver Surfer...what the hell did his dad do to him...

Well everything has pretty much been said, but I did want to add that this feels more like the comics I read growing up where more plot elements and characters are being pulled together from the larger story to tell bigger and more complex stories. This is the sort of payoff I've been waiting for in the order where a familiarity with the universe has been well developed and more opportunities arise to reward invested readers for their knowledge by telling more expansive stories while maintaining an intimacy with the experiences of its characters.

Did that make sense?

I did "enjoy" the fidelity of art in the retelling of FF 54 with the exception that they retconned Wyatt to be red skinned and referred to him as "Indian" which I think was the first time that his character was referred to in that way. Difficult to understand the decision there.... Yeesh. I always thought Wyatt was the coolest of the "Regular Joe" side-kicks and that shot he made to take out the evil eye was bad ass... oh well! Luckily we've got Rick Jones to fill the void.

I will say, when Loki runs down the list of Defenders, it makes some sense that they would be mistrusted. Three of them (Namor, Surfer, and Valkyrie) have been straight up villains, and Hulk is a natural disaster at best. Add a mysterious sorcerer and estranged former teammate, and they really do look like a new Masters of Evil
