Blacked out text can be read by highlighting that section.

  Kez Says:

This issue was just surreal. What was the point?

  Redsvetz Says:
  2011-12-22 10:47:39
I wonder if the transition of writers from Roy Thomas to Gary Friedrich had anything to do with this foolishness.

  imeco Says:
  2012-05-08 14:45:30
Not much really important happened in this issue...

  Xythe Says:
  2012-05-31 07:14:33
So it took Red Raven until his 21st birthday to realise he wasn't really a birdman? Even though he was the only person who didn't have wings. I think he's a couple of cans short of a six-pack.

  Duhhaag Says:
  2012-07-06 06:24:43
  What was that all about?

  Calthor Says:
  2012-07-08 15:54:14
Let's just interrupt our storyline with a random island... And sink it again at the end of the issue.

Absolutely weird.

  andyzh Says:

come on Magneto is the leader how come he's following quicksilver and the toad then and doing what they're telling him to and not the other way around

  rubixcube60 Says:
  2012-09-15 15:57:04
So they halt an ongoing plot line to send a character on a detour, the sole purpose of which was to bring back a character that hasn't been seen or mentioned in 28 years and ended up only lasting for a single issue. The fact that someone thought of this is almost as amazing as the fact that someone even remembered who Red Raven was.

At The Gates of Dawn Says:
  2013-08-13 20:02:39
Wow! Really guys!? A filler story in the middle of an intense storyline!? This is unacceptable! This has to be the worst issue of the entire 1960's run!

  leisch Says:
  2013-08-15 14:54:22
A decent Magneto story gets interrupted for a schlock 40s hero return.

  Shark Says:
  2014-02-12 16:17:03
I'm not really sure of what the point of this issue is... I can at least defend the raven's costume, pretty good.

  duncanm Says:
  2014-05-19 12:07:27
Don't you wish that you too lived in a world where severe electrocution simply results in some sleepy-time?
While the thermo-cell for Iceman is a nice twist, I'm pretty sure that all of those other traps have been done before. So who but Magneto could have thought of them? Other people...apparently.
Wait, Charlie Brown was a mutant? This explains so much...
If he's Red Raven the birdman, then why does he have bat wings?
It took this guy 21 years to realize he was the only one without wings? Was he checked for brain damage after the plane crash?
Wonder if this island has a glowing cave, and a donkey wheel that sends it through space and time.
You know your comic may be having issues when you have a multi-issue arc about going to another superteam to get help.
One thing I've never understood is why, when being accused of being a mutant, people don't just say "No, I was bitten by a cosmic gamma irradiated supersoldier." That seems to be an okay reason to have powers in the Marvel U.

  Anonymous Says:

I think the Toad has a crush on Magneto...

  Tarquinnff3 Says:
  2014-09-16 14:34:17
Why would Angel of all people suggest that winged people be experimented on? What whacked out dimension is he living in. If they don't accept the mutants, why would they accept bird men? Oh Angel.

The side story: why do people have to be so ignorant sometimes?

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:
  2014-09-23 11:23:11
This issue was unnecessary. Also, what's with all the misspellings? Most of the big words are not spelled correctly...

I was a fool to think this title was improving. A damn fool.

Cyclops suggests Angel goes to find the Avengers.
Angel escapes and thinks up out of nowhere the brilliant idea to go find the Avengers.

Angel is a d**k.

Thankfully only very few Red Raven storylines in the order.

  Locust75 Says:

Just 1 star for the Red Raven getting his feather's plucked! I'm all for bringing back older characters, but trying to cram it all in only 9 pages is just redonkulous!!!

Credit Due - Roy Thomas still plotted this mess; while Gary Friedrich scripted it!

Traitor To The Cause - Hmmm...I wonder who left the disintegrator device for Angel to find?

To The Archives - Stan, Quicksilver could float way back in Strange Tales #128, and fly in Avengers #43.

Hanger On - Finally, Angel's not useless anymore!!

?Question? - If I'm reading this right...then the Birdmen's Military Complex is still floating around in the sky?

Wing It - Did Red Raven just shoot Angel with his...wing? (p14,p4)

'Nuff Said - "Get serious! What harm can a couple of hundred birdmen do to the armed forces of the United States?"-Angel

So much for it getting better. The Iceman origin story wasn't too terrible. Bobby's father isn't the full on anti-mutant bigot yet. Is that something that only came around during the X-Factor years?

  Katryn Says:

I would wonder what was wrong with Reed Raven that it took him 21 years to realise he was the only one without wings, but their leader refused to recognise that there were more humans than birdmen. They didn't even get to whether the humans could fight, just how many there were, and no.
Also, are we sure that Angel's dad is who we think he is? Angel looks awfully like those comatose birdmen...just saying.

  GroovyGolem Says:
  2016-07-17 11:59:26
The King of the Birdmen obviously went to the Odin School of Leadership.

Didn't realize Red Raven was from the 40s. I kept thinking the story was a throwback to the old Flash Gordon serials. Now I know why.

On a side note... Toad's costume... Why? Just... Why?

  Russ Says:
  2016-10-22 07:22:54
The point of this story? Roy showing off his comic historian skills and bringing back an obscure character from the really early days of Timely. Red Raven appeared in his own comic for one issue in 1940, according to Wikipedia. (wait, Red Raven actually has a Wikipedia entry?) Marvel Unlimited doesn't list the title. Thing is, if a Golden Age character lasts just one story, there's a reason behind that, and it's probably not a good idea to resurrect said character.

So what did we learn today? Let sleeping ravens lie.

One note: Red Raven does have a cool costume. But is it me, or do his wings resemble bat wings?

Trivia Note of the day: Red Raven Comics became Human Torch with issue #2.

Why does Red Raven have a better costume than the Angel?

  Urgat Says:
  2017-08-30 04:56:11
Oha..today I learned something from all these comments:

Red Raven was not just thought up for this filler story, he was an actually Golden Age character...

Hmmmmm...will we see him again in 21 years for one story (or a story arc in modern comics), when the Island should rise again...

  chademe Says:
  2017-12-05 13:31:04
Knowing that Red Raven was a Golden Age hero, makes this comic slightly better, but there was still so much wrong with the story. And before leaving, Angel should have stolen Red Raven's costume, because it's much better.

  bill_the_cat Says:
  2018-03-03 10:53:08
Did we need this filler issue so that X-men lined up with Avengers #53?
