The writing in this is painful.

The "insect vision" art on page 18 was fun, and the cryptic reference Iron Man makes about the crater and the statues that the "under 20s" will need to puzzle out (Lovecraft ref? If so, which story?) and the glue vomit monster make this almost a three star issue. Almost. But the fact that this is so bad for one of the few comics Harlan Ellison was involved in almost makes this a one star issue out of disappointment. Almost.

I'm pretty sure the underground statues is a reference to Fawcett Comics' Captain Marvel. Billy Batson receives the power of Captain Marvel from Shazam, the old wizard that lives in an underground cave. In the cave are also seven statues representing the seven deadly sins.

Roy Thomas sure likes his H.P. Lovecraft-references...

Seemed like it should have been an issue of Cap or Hulk instead of Avengers. I like the precursor to the Illuminati as Prof. X & Reed work to bring down the Hulk.

You're going to shrink him so you can look at him under a microscope? Seems counter-intuitive

I don't understand why Goliath always stays big even if it's inconvenient. Why doesn't he just stay normal sized until combat starts?

3 stars. Everything was decent at best. Plot was decent, dialogue was mediocre, art was decent... Not a fan of the villain thing and his origin. Glad he doesn't last.

I really hope the follow up Hulk issue pays off. I'm kind of surprised at this one, considering who wrote it.

  duncanm Says:

That was pretty confusing. It feels like we missed a story or two. Why are Reed and Prof X doing science to the Hulk? How did they trap him? Are Cap, Iron Man, and Thor full time members again? Why would you name a villain something nearly identical to a hero you already have? Why did the narrator tell the Hulk to cream in impotent rage? (Ew!) I hope we get some of the backstory explained in some follow up issues.

Just 2 stars for what everyone has already said. If only the Avengers had brought an can of RAID!!!

The Big Sleep - Gen Ross mentions Howard Hawkes, but I wonder if he meant Howard Hawks??

Gasbag - I wonder if Reed confiscated the coma gas from Hydra? (ST 140)

Point A to Point B - They could of found a better way to get the Avengers to Psyklop's island. Then having Falcon's friend muttering coordinates...

Splash - Cool image of the Dark God Statue!!!

Crossed Wires - Iron Man thinks Thor's hammer caused the hole in the ground when it should've been the slug!!

'Nuff Said - "Some sort of slimy liquid--hardening around him--in an instant!"-Curious Cap

If no Avengers were in this story it would be the same. Some people get mind controlled into the woods and cops come. Hulk gets kid napped and shrunk.

Scarlet Witch needs to take a better look at her teammates - Thor and Iron Man, yeah sure, not much can take them. But Goliath tends to go down very easily every issue, so I wouldn't be relying too much on him.

This one was just...weird. I liked where this was going, but the story was disjointed. No real explanation for how the Hulk was captured in the first place (last seen in the Defenders story in Marvel Feature #2, in Rutland, Vermont). And no explanation for how that voodoo ritual was tied in to what Psyklop was doing. Nonetheless, I have to admit it was actually a pretty fun yarn.

"Cream in impotent rage?" So an alternative treatment for Cialis is electro-shock therapy?

Reed Richards and Professor Xavier, with technology supplied by Tony Stark? Where have we seen this before....?

The insect vision on page 18 showed 80 heroes coming after Psyklop. No wonder he freaked out!

3 stars. Kudos to Harlan Ellison for supplying an intriguing story idea, though the execution left something to be desired. I think the continuation in Hulk #140 will be a lot better.

Goliath must be really frustrated there are no women around to vent his sexism at. It would be annoying to have these stories continue in a different series if you were on a tight budget.

  Cool art on page 18.

It was only half a story and suffered from Thomas doing some pretty corny dialogue, but there was some good action and cool monsters, so it was ok for all that.
